I'm back. I spent Thanksgiving week with my family in Moscow, Russia. (The anticipation is building to relive the trip via my 5 rolls at the lab.)  I spent this morning in Waco, Texas shooting a portrait for a great new client. Some of the above familiar sites ( as seen above) were comforting.

Promise

I'll be spending the afternoon at the Barry Whistler Gallery. There are two more weeks left of my show, Maine. Come see me if you are in the neighborhood. Here is a review of the show that made my Mom proud. Above is Promise. It was Barry's idea to print this one 50x50. The first time I have ever printed so large. It's presence takes my breath away every time I see it.

I'm almost running out of room in my favorite 2010 assignments list. This was one was way up there. I spent the day at Greenberg Smoked Turkey's in Tyler , Texas photographing the process. I was especially thrilled that my photograph of Tony Wallace who has manned the fire pits at Greenberg's for 27 years landed on the front cover of the Dining section. Did I mention I smelled like smoked Turkey's for 2 days?

So far, one of my favorite assignments of 2010 was the above for Air Tran Airways inflight magazine. I spent the last Friday in August at Abbott High School in Abbott, Texas photographing their 6 man football team. The reporter, Clay Latimer , and I attended the pep rally and game, ate booster club hamburgers and discussed Panther Pride with Coach. See more here.

Above a few of my favorite shots from last week's Wall Street Journal assignment to photograph Energy Transfer Partners' CEO,  Kelcy Warren's music room in his Dallas home. The full story ran in yesterday's real estate section but can be seen here. One of the best things about my job is all the magicalamazing, gifted people that I get to meet and photograph. That night was no exception. See more here.

Recognize me?

1960?©Stanley Marcus
One of my favorite outtakes from our book , Reflection of a Man, the photographs of Stanley Marcus, is this mysterious one above. For some reason, I think it was shot in Mexico City. Can anyone identify the photographer in the wheelchair? That fancy flash & camera and the ladies in fur suggest to me that he was a famous photographer. So I am putting it out there.. does anyone recognize this dapper man?

WIN

Win+Nolan Ryan. Arlington, Texas. 2008. © Allison V. Smith

I shot both photos a few years back on assignment for USA Today. The assignment was to shoot a portrait of Nolan Ryan, the new president of the Texas Rangers. I wanted to photograph him in the dugout , so we walked from his office, across the park and through the tunnel that lead to the dugout. That's where I spotted the crudely drawn WIN with the red horseshoe. I shot a super fast snap and we moved on. I was not a big Rangers fan that day, but I'll admit I'm on the bandwagon now, big time.
Go Rangers, Win.
