One of my sisters just passed a long a link to me of photographer Alexander Gronsky's work.
She saw a show of his on a recent trip to Amsterdam.
Wow.
The simplicity, use of empty space, composition & timing in these photographs are perfect.
These photos really inspire me!

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. September 2010. Dallas, Texas © Allison V. Smith

I had the opportunity to photograph Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers show Tuesday night. Shooting concerts was always one of my favorite perks when I worked for newspapers. Regardless of the act, whether it was ACDC or Hanson, it was  always energizing. As a long time fan of the Heartbreakers, I'll admit, it was a real rush seeing the  Tom Petty mojo in action.

It's officially fair season.
Today they hoisted my favorite cowboy into place at the fair grounds.
Count down to corny dogs & photo ops.
Here are some fair photos I love.

Look closely when you get this Sunday's  New York Times Magazine ! On page 53, my photo of a 1972 Texas Instruments hand-held calculator is featured in an article called The Learning Machines. It's always a thrill to be published in the NYT magazine (even if it is a cut-out).

Check out Max Stalling's latest poster. The friendly folks over at Matchbox Studio designed it! They also designed Max's beautiful cd that I briefly blogged about earlier this summer.

It's cotton picking season in Texas. Barry and I drove south today and cotton fields surrounded us. It's a breathtaking sight to see. Above a photo I shot last month on assignment in Abbott, Texas.

A few months back, I photographed artist Michael Miller in his studio in Commerce, Texas for F!D Luxe. Tomorrow night Michael's show , Today I am Thankful for All I Have, opens at the Barry Whistler Gallery. The show will feature 50 new punchy paper pieces ( I've already picked out the one I want!)  and 6 canvases. This fall also marks the gallery's 25th anniversary

Much Ado

Part of the charm of editorial work is you really never know how your photos will run until the paper ( or magazine) comes out. I've lost count on how many times my heart has been broken by postage stamps, below the folds, A9 in b&w or cropped beyond recognition. The boys above did not make the cover of Parade on Sunday. Regardless, they are still rockstars and new friends. Here are a few favorites from our shoot in May.
