From the Files

Death Row. 1998 ©Allison V. Smith

Inspired by my recent obsession with The Wire, I decided to blog some photographs that I shot 12 years ago as part of a project on Texas prisons. I google searched the names of the 2 men playing handball on death row and according to Texas records , they were both executed in early 2000. Slightly Haunting.

That is very haunting. They remind me a bit of the stuff Avedon did in his American West work. What were these images originally published with? Also, did you see the New Yorker article about the death penalty and the case of Cameron Todd Willingham?

Thanks Matt. Jason, these were published in the Fort Worth Star Telegram in 1998. I did not catch that article in the New Yorker, which issue?

Glad to know the FWST has published some of your work. Just seems like not much of that caliber of work finds its way into newspapers these days. Good stuff.

The Willingham article in the New Yorker was in the September 7th 2009 article. Here's a link to the article on their website. Very interesting.

I think your photos make the subject matter interesting. By itself, the subject matter is sort of just creepy because it's dudes in the slammer. Another example of photos elevating the subject matter would be people in plaid. You know who shot them. Plaid for plaid's sake isn't all that compelling. A photo collection of gay men, women, and dogs sporting plaid... well, I think that begins to talk about something. Great images tell us things about ourselves.

It's haunting when life catches up with pictures, I just posted a shot of a rottweiler, only to discover later of a vicious attack on a 12 yr old girl, it makes you think
