A few scenes from a Morphoses dance rehearsal at the stunning new Winspear Opera House that I shot for the New York Times. My assignment was to photograph choreographer Christopher Wheeldon in action. I love disappearing when I am shooting. Getting in the zone and being invisible is the best. Somehow shooting dance allows you to do all of that.

Last week my 6 year old neighbor Gus asked if I would photograph his hand colored Flat Stanley for a school project. Mr. Stanley took a roadtrip with us last weekend to West Texas. We showed him some beautiful West Texas sights.

Life With Dystonia

My friend Rogers spoke at the TEDxSMU this past weekend. Word on the street is the inspired crowd gave her a standing ovation. When we reconnected last year I discovered that she had been living with a neurological disorder for over a year. Rogers has Dystonia. Recently she asked if I would document a visit to the doctor: a round of 20 Botox injections . Above are some of my shots that she used in her presentation. Check her Life With Dystonia blog here.

In 1999, my grandfather gave me a signed copy of a catalog of Issey Miyake with photographs by Irving Penn. The enclosed note reads:" Dear Allie, Penn in my opinion, is the greatest of the fashion photographers and perhaps one of the real Greats of the 20th century. Stanley" In 2000, my mom and I saw a show of Penn's work in at the MFAH. Seeing his prints in person and in mass made my grandfather's words very clear. Penn could fill a frame like nobody's business. From high end fashion to New Guinea mud men, Penn put them at ease. I especially love the body language in his portrait of poet, set designer & artist Jean Cocteau (see above). RIP Irving Penn. Thanks for the inspiration.
