Andy Hanson

I had lunch with Andy Hanson, photographer and stamp collector extraordinaire, today in celebration of his birthday. I shot these two portraits inside the elevator at downtown Neiman Marcus. Andy has been photographing Dallas for the past 40 years. He has a beautiful show at the Hall of State at Fair Park in Dallas. Make sure to see it before it comes down on June 11th. Someday I just might post a photo that Andy shot of me when I was at least 5.

Andy is looking twice as good as the last time I saw him. I shared a darkroom with Andy at the Dallas Times Herald, yes when we still souped film and I remember a photo intern named Alison V. Smith. She rode around with me on day looking for feature pictures. Bless her heart.

I shared a darkroom at the Herald with Andy from 1971-1975. He auditioned me for a couple of days and finally declared that I would keep our little space far cleaner and neat that the other sloppy photographers, two of whom later won Pulitzers - Skeeter Hagler and Jay Dickman. They shared the darkroom next to ours. Andy was a great guy, a kind, sensitive and caring fellow who enjoyed photographing the arts, entertainers, anything connected with the theater and with music. He always kept the little radio in our darkroom tuned to the classical music on WRR. He inspired me to become a better photographer for which I will always be greatful. - Randy Black, theprguy@grandecom.net

I have a bunch of items that belonged to Andy Hanson. Some really cool stuff!!! Movie memorabilia, magazines, pics, post cards, stamps, negatives, etc...... Got out of a storage unit I won at auction that may have belonged to his daughter or close relative. hawesome2011@gmail.com
